Animal Attraction: Singita Game Reserves

12:11 AM PST - 1/6/2008
by: Darren Elms

The safari experience has shot to the top of many a luxury traveler’s “must-do” list in recent years, bringing more and more curious explorers to the breathtaking landscape of Africa’s game reserves. Though it’s difficult to compete with the natural richness of the stunning wildlife, many safari companies haveattached first-class accommodations, amenities and services to further sweeten the adventure. One company in particular continues to climb the “best of” lists year after year, securing top spots in such publications as Conde Nast Traveler, Travel + Leisure and Zagat. SingitaGame Reserves comprises three safari destinations, each with its own brand of luxury, dazzling wildlife and unique lodges or camps. The first two, Sabi Sand and Kruger National Park, neighbor each other in South Africa’s eastern escarpment in the Province of Mpumalanga. The third, Grumeti Reserves, lies in Tanzania’s magical Serengeti. Though set apart by vast territory, all three prime locations for viewing Africa’s splendor share Singita’s commitment to comfort, service and recreation.

SABI SAND

The decision was made to open the Sabi Sand Reserve, originally a game farm, to the public in 1994. Two lodges were built, Ebony and Boulders, each quickly garnering acclaim and awards from around the world. Bisected by the Sand River, the area’s water source draws plenty of wildlife, from the bigcats and elephants to zebras and smaller creatures. The varied landscape provides the perfect backdrop, with acacia thornveld and marula trees opening into vast grasslands for grazing antelope. The safari days start early here, just as the sun rises above the African bush. After a warm drink and light snack, you and your guide set out for a memorable adventure.

The founding Singita property on the reserve, Ebony Lodge, with its bohemian, colonial bush décor, celebrates the inviting traditions of the region. Located on the banks of the river, the lodge is made up entirely of private suites featuring its own plunge pools with views of watering game. The lodge is also known for world-class cuisine and features an extensive wine cellar.

Boulders Lodge follows the order of nature in its organic, free-flowing design. With a palette of warm earth tones and plenty of open spaces for meditation and mingling, the vibe here is especially tranquil and reflective. With little standing between you and the wildlife in your backyard, a connection with Africa’s spirit comes naturally.

Both lodges share the Bush Spa, a wonderful mid-day escape into pure bliss. The long list of services includes the Body Blitz, an intense detox and exfoliation with massage, and Big Five Therapy, with two therapists spoiling your body with everything from a chocolate moisturizing wrap to a milk mousse bath.

KRUGER NATIONAL PARK

Nearly a decade ago, Singita was granted the rights to a 20-year concession in the southeast corner of the Kruger National Park that borders its reserve at Sabi Sand. This agreement allowed access to some of the most beautiful scenery and exciting wildlife in the region.

The Lebombo Lodge offers a precious remote location with all the luxuries one would imagine from a Singita property. Here one takes flight for a dramatic, soaring experience. Perched above the gorgeous landscape, the glass walled suites were inspired by the nests of wild eagles and their wide views from above.

If Lebombo finds its soul in the sky, the Sweni Lodge lays its roots in Mother Earth. Seated on the edge of the Sweni River in the shadows of the forest, the isolated location makes for a lush haven of rest and refuge. Covered in deep greens and earthy shades, the lodge and grounds allow visitors to become one with their surroundings and follow Singita’s philosophy of “touching the earth lightly.”

The Village Spa at Singita Sweni and Lebombo provides a place of tranquility and balance between earth and sky. The facility features Dermalogica products, a variety of massages, body therapies and special treatments that include a Deluxe Grape Luxury Bath, Reflexology, African Hot Rock Therapy and the “Elephant’s Footprints” pedicure for tired jet-lagged legs and feet.

GRUMETI RESERVES

The Grumeti Reserves in Tanzania’s picturesque Serengeti is widely known for its wildlife viewing advantages. It’s here that two million animals migrate yearly across the plains. Even during non-migration seasons, herds of animals are still in view for spectators to enjoy.

The reserve is also home to one of the most desirable properties in Africa, the Sasakwa Lodge. Built in the style of a turn-of the century East African ranch house, the lodge offers stunning views of the Serengeti plains below. The design is a combination of colorful bush traditions and elegant Western accents, like Venetian mirrors and crystal chandeliers. All-inclusive, the lodge offers delicious cuisines, award-winning wines, a spa and plenty of recreational activities, both on-site and out in the Serengeti.

Faru Faru lodge sits on the Grumeti River, a watering hole for the Serengeti wildlife. Built in the style of a classic East African camp, the lodge’s prime location provides unobstructed views from the elevated decks. The Swahiliinspired beach only adds to the aura of rest and relaxation.

Travelers in search of the Out of Africa experience will relish the Sabora Tented Camp, a simple yet romantic adventure with 360- degree views of the area. Six lavish tents are exquisitely decorated with European finery, ethnic objects and campaign furniture.

GETTING THERE

Visitors primarily fly into Johannesburg and take a direct flight to either South African reserve. Those flying from Cape Town will need to take an additional flight to Kruger Mpumalanga Airport and then take a 20-minute chartered flight to either of the reserve destinations. Guests flying to the Grumeti Reserve will need to take a flight into Nairobi, and then to Kilimanjaro before boarding a local flight to one of the lodges. Yes, it's plenty of plane travel, but worth the journey.

CONSERVATION & COMMUNITY

Singita is doing its part to help preserve the wilderness for future generations and create a sense of community and growth with its neighbors. These efforts have included buying goods from local businesses, creating job opportunities and developing numerous agricultural projects in Tanzania.Such endeavors have helped convert onetime poachers into conservationists and set up a trust to help feed thousands of children in need. These strides give Africa strength and will help keep the prized wilderness fruitful and pristine for years to come.
