Breitling’s latest addition to its Navitimer line, the new Montbrillant Légende Chronograph, is a marvelous fusion of the company’s past and its future. Beginning in the 1930s, the company became the official watchmaker for the British Royal Air Force and also supplied watches for the American Air Force during World War II. The watch remains faithful to the company’s aeronautical spirit in more ways than one, equipped not only with the famous circular slide rule, but also a conversion scale for the main aviation weights and measures on its case back. The 47 mm watch face, the largest in the collection, is imposing but not overwhelming, and the smooth integration of case and bracelet showcase the model with flowing and balanced lines.
The styling and layout of the dial are resolutely inspired by the 1940s. This is also true of the hands, the traditional central 1/100th of an hour indication, as well as the horizontal totalizers at nine and three o’clock, characteristic of the Breitling Caliber 23 movement. Breitling offers two finishes: standard steel, and a more daring steel and rose gold version in which the crown, push pieces and bezel are all crafted in the precious metal.
