Runway Rendezvous - Fashion Weeks in Paris and New York

4:55 PM PST - 9/22/2008
by: Darren Elms

Chanel. Versace. Gucci. Ralph Lauren. To some, these are merely names on a map of Rodeo Drive. To others, however, the mention of one of these iconic brands ignites a fiery passion…for the art of fashion, that is. Several times a year, devotees of style pack up their hautest heels and take off for chic locations around the world to witness the latest and greatest from their favorite fashion houses. Two capitals of couture, Paris and New York, not only offer a spectacle of the biggest names and the brightest soirees, but they also boast plenty of fashionable sightseeing and shopping. Enjoy our en vogue itinerary, from catwalk to cocktails, tailor-made for the fashionista in all of us.

Paris Strikes a Pose

Ahh, Paris… Perhaps no other European metropolis conjures such a heady blend of romantic mood and startling beauty as does the City of Light. No wonder the fashion world chooses this divine ambiance for showcasing its newest wares. Since 1973, Paris Fashion Week has drawn both designer and disciple for a decidedly French take on the current runway scene. Coming up next, Spring/Summer 2009 lines will commandthe stage September 27 through October 5.

Before you can check out the fashions, you must check in to one of Paris’s gorgeous hotels, some of the best of which are located right off the fashionable Champs-Elysées. The George V, a Four Seasons Hotel, dazzles with a chic clientele and 17th century elegance. If you’re a celebrity visiting Paris, chances are you are already registered at the George V. On a recent trip, fans and paparazzi were scattered outside the hotel waiting for a glimpse of Céline Dion, in town for her current tour. It’s no surprise that the rich and famous prefer these walls; a recent renovation has restored its past glory, making it THE place to see and be seen. Guests can choose from a variety of amenity-rich suites, most offering commanding views of the city lights. Another favorite haunt of the well-heeled, The Hôtel Crillon, offers two exceptional suites with familiar monikers: The Bernstein Suite once hosted the famous composer and provides stunning views of the Eiffel Tower from two large terraces. The Louis XV Suite is not unlike staying at Versailles, with silk furniture and painted wood paneling throughout the plush apartment.

Dining is nothing short of divine in Paris, where the art of food often rivals the art of fashion. Pershing Hall, walking distance from the Champs-Elysées, will no doubt draw many models and designers to its chic yet hip vertical garden setting, perfect for the post-runway rendezvous. There will be plenty of couture conversations buzzing around Maison Blanche, which has one of the most coveted reservation lists in Paris. When I dined there in May, I was absolutely blown away by the chef’s offerings (I still have dreams about my rose tiramisu dessert). And be sure to ask for the patio if it’s available.

Early autumn is a gorgeous time to stroll the boulevards of Paris and take in all the sites. Les Galeries Nationales du Grand Palais, recent host to the immensely popular Marie Antoinette exhibition, will next welcome Picasso et les Maîtres, a look at the great masters that inspired one of the greatest artists of all time.

Once you’ve hit the museums, head to Saint-Germain-des-Prés for some exceptional boutique shopping. Be sure to stop at Ladurée for one of my most treasured Parisian treats, the macaron. Beautifully packaged with flavors like Orange Blossom and Salted Butter Caramel, how could you possibly resist? I took mine to the nearby, and still quite fashionable, Café Les Deux Magots and watched the world go by. Magnifique.

Big Apple Buzz

When the big tent goes up in Bryant Park, there’s only one explanation: Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. From seasoned pros like Diane von Fürstenburg to fashion newbies from Bravo’s Project Runway, this exciting event showcases a variety of talent, classic to cutting-edge. The Spring 2009 lines hit the runway starting September 5.

Hanging up your week’s worth of wardrobe should be no challenge with the variety of first-class hotels throughout Manhattan. If you’re staying uptown close to the action, park your Louis Vuittons at the St. Regis Hotel. The five-star legendary landmark features a spa and a collection of sophisticated suites, including the Christian Dior Designer Suite, decorated to perfection by the fashion legend.

Puttin’ on the Ritz couldn’t be more apropos at the Ritz Carlton’s Central Park location. Their fabulously well-appointed suites overlooking the park will make you feel right at home. Want even more incredible views? Swing by the Mandarin Oriental in bustling Columbus Circle, also a great spot for a late night cocktail. If you’re headed to trendy Downtown, look no further than the Gramercy Park Hotel for your stay. The Ian Schrager property showcases a highly original design and attracts a wonderfully stylish crowd.

New York is a shopper’s delight, with big names and booming boutiques from 5th Avenue to SoHo. If you’re in the mood for the latest names, check out Jeffrey in the trendy Meat Packing District. It’s your one-stop shopping experience with a great atmosphere. One of my favorite little neighborhoods is Nolita, near SoHo. I recently came across a couple of really great small stores, including Lord Willy’s, a men’s tailoring shop with a distinctly British flavor. Their custom made suits and shirts are heavenly and not to be missed.

Shopping can work up an appetite, so get ready to dine out in style. Tom Colicchio’s Gramercy Tavern impresses with an extensive wine list, beautiful dishes and exceptional service. Also highly recommended is the 3-Michelin- Star-rated Jean-Georges on Central Park West. Try from Chef Vongerichten’s assortment of signature dishes and delectable seasonal offerings. Good luck squeezing into that Prada skirt after one of these amazing meals!

Paris to New York and beyond, fashion will be the word on everyone’s lips this season. While the options may be as endless as your wardrobe, a little clever planning can make for a truly stylish sojourn. See you on the runway.
