“Cats rule and dogs drool!” This memorable quote from the popular movie, Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey, might resonate with cat lovers, but when it comes to parks that are designed specifically with certain critters in mind, dogs rule and cats drool with envy.
The popular dog travel guide – dogfriendly.com – estimates that there are about 125 offleash dog parks in California. Sacramento (and the surrounding area) is home to 13 off-leash dog parks, with more planned. Dog parks are the ideal venues for our four-legged friends to socialize with other dogs and their human companions, chase tennis balls or Frisbees with reckless abandon, sniff the ground with the determination of reporters on the trail of breaking news stories, or simply run around like there is no tomorrow.
Off-leash dog parks are fenced, with a double-gate entry that allows dogs a safe passage in and out of the park. Most feature drinking fountains for dogs, waste bag dispensers, benches for owners and grassy areas to romp and play. Some parks have separate areas for large and small dogs, obstacle courses, and one even includes fire hydrants. Dog owners often supply tennis balls and a plastic kiddie pool or two, for the pupsters to cool off during the dog days of summer (pun fully intended).
To ensure the safety and enjoyment of dogs and their human companions, 10 simple “rules of etiquette” should be observed when visiting a dog park. No one is at the gate to enforce them, so visitors are on the honor system.
Dog Park Etiquette
1. Observe all posted rules of the dog park.
2. Be a responsible dog owner and monitor your pet at all times. Never leave your dog(s) unattended.
3. Clean up. Off-leash dog parks have dispensers with glove-like plastic bags to use for picking up dog droppings, and have receptacles to dispose of the waste. Some parks even supply long-handled pooper scoopers. Play it safe and bring a few plastic grocery bags with you.
4. If your dog is aggressive, don’t bother coming. A dog park is a place for dogs to play, socialize, exercise and interact with other dogs and their owners. It is not a place to engage in a fight.
5. To ensure control, it is a good idea for one person not to bring more than two dogs.
6. Dogs must be current on all of their vaccinations.
7. Do not bring your female dog if she is in season.
8. Young children must be accompanied by an adult and closely supervised.
9. Carry a leash with you at all times.
10. Most importantly, have a great time with your dog! Although the benefits far outweigh the risks, there can be dangers associated with dog parks, especially when it comes to germs and disease. Although visiting pets are required to be current on their vaccinations, there is no way to guarantee this. That’s why it is extremely important that your dog is up to date on his or her shots and that you closely watch your dog while at the park. Off-leash dog parks can be a safe place to visit as long as you do your part as a responsible dog owner and are aware of potential dangers. With this is mind, what better time than spring to visit a park near you and enjoy some quality time with your pooch?
